Adjustable Gastric Banding Aftercare Program

Your enthusiasm and commitment to embrace a new lifestyle are important for your successful, long-term weight loss. Our commitment to you is to design an all-inclusive aftercare program providing long-term patient follow-up, together with the disciplines of medicine, surgery, nutrition, counseling, and exercise.

ADJUSTABLE GASTRIC BANDS

Lap Bands are designed to be adjusted post-operative.  Band fills are an essential part of your treatment. Without adjustments you will not lose weight. As you are losing weight, your abdomen and esophagus will shrink leaving your band loose.  Our surgeons will increase or decrease the amount of fluid in your band in order to increase or decrease the tension of the band around your stomach/esophagus. To modify the size of the band, its inner surface is inflated or deflated with saline solution.  The band is connected by tubing to a reservoir or port, which was placed well under the skin during your surgery.

Adjustments or band fills are performed under fluoroscopy, because of its advantages:

  • Checking leakage
  • Checking slippage
  • Checking the size of your pouch (reservoir)
  • Checking the location of your port

The cost for Fills is $250 which includes your fluoroscopy guided examination and secondary, standing barium swallow.

NUTRITION, EDUCATION AND SUPPORT PROGRAMS

Nutrition is the first step to good health. We take a proactive approach of supplementing all patients via protein drinks, vitamins and IV therapy when necessary. Exercise is an equally important component of your changed lifestyle. Adequate exercise will not only help you in your battle against excess weight, but it will also benefit your general health and well-being.  Your size may make it hard for you to exercise as much as you should. But get started. Start with simple exercises, such as walking and swimming. Gradually expand your program to include more vigorous forms of exercise such as cycling, jogging, and aerobics. Psychological and behaviorist counseling is available, we recommend that you discuss this with one of our surgeons.  Round Robin Support is an informal meeting, held once a month, which provides an opportunity for patients to interact on an informal basis with other patients. Often, a patient will have questions that can be answered by another patient who has also had the procedure.   Our surgeons and staff are available during these meetings to answer any medical questions you may have.
