Anti-aging with Botox® Botox® is extremely effective in improving the appearance of worry lines, frown lines, laugh lines, crow's feet and other natural wrinkle lines that occur with aging. Injections of Botox® can inactivate the muscles that produce the wrinkles thereby causing the lines to disappear for several months at a time. How does Botox® work? Injecting Botox® directly into a muscle stops that muscle's ability to contract, so that the wrinkles caused by the contraction gradually fade away. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. Will it last? The actual treatment takes only a few minutes and the Botox® takes effect in three to four days. Gradually over three to five months the Botox® effect will fade, and the muscle action will return. When the wrinkle lines start to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired result. Where is Botox® most effective? Botox® is effective in the treatment of frown lines, crow's feet, forehead wrinkles, and neck folds. Has Botox® been tested? Botox® has been used since 1980 for the treatment of several eye disorders. The use of Botox® for forehead wrinkles began in 1989. The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology published a review of this technique in 1995. Side effects The side effects of Botox® are related to the local injection of the solution. There will be a slight discomfort from the needle entering the skin, and a small chance of a bruise at the site of the injection. There are no reports of damage to the eye, with injections to the eyelid, and there have been no permanent side effects from the use of Botox®. Approximately 1% of patients will develop a slight lowering or ptosis of one eyelid. This is temporary and may not even be noticed by the patient.
