Sclerotherapy Many people have unattractive, enlarged veins found on the thighs, around the knees, and on the calves and ankles. These are commonly referred to as spider veins and can be treated by a relatively simple procedure known as sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy may improve the appearance of your legs and consists of injecting the veins with a solution which causes the vein to disappear. The more you know about the procedure and options involved, the better equipped you will be to make the decision that is best for you. Our Surgeons and the staff of the Dallas-Fort Worth Institute of Body Sculpturing are available to answer any questions or concerns that you may have about sclerotherapy. The Technique of SclerotherapyThe surgeon will inject a solution into the veins 2 or 3 times over a period of several weeks to months. The veins will usually begin to appear lighter within several weeks following treatment. The procedure may need to be repeated, depending upon the degree of severity. Sclerotherapy is an in office procedure and each session usually requires 20 minutes or longer. What are the After Effects? Most patients experience minimal pain during the injection. Following treatment, pressure may be applied to the injected area for one day. Often, normal activity may be resumed following treatment. RisksMost patients are very pleased with the results of sclerotherapy and complications are rare. There are risks in any surgical procedure and you should discuss this with your surgeon.
